Here is a simple online calculator to calculate the 'Whips', which is the walks plus hits per innings pitched, in the baseball statistics. It is an alternative to the more popular Earned Run Average. This calculator provides the Walks and Hits Per Innings (WHIP), Walks Inning Pitched Ratio and Hits Per Inning (HIP). Enter the values for 'Walks', 'Hits' and 'Innings Pitched' and click calculate to find the 'WHIP' and 'HIP'.
In a 7 innings basketball game, if the number of walks is 50 and hits is 20, then
WHIP = 50 + 30 / 7
Walks Inning Pitched Ratio = 7 / 50
HIP = 20 / 7
A lower WHIP number is generally considered better, as it means that the pitcher allows fewer batters on base for each inning pitched. In Baseball, on Walks and Hits to Inning Pitched can also be calculated as when outs (partial innings) is considered:
WHIP = (Walks + Hits) / (Innings Pitched + (Outs (Partial Innings) Pitched / 3))
