Definition:

Orbital speed is the average speed at which the Earth rotates around the sun.

Formula :
Orbital speed =2 x ∏ x a / T
Where,
a = Semimajor axis length T = Orbital period
Example:

A jet plane moves east at the equator through the earth's surface. Calculate the orbital of the jet plane, if the semi major axis length is 6 x 106 m, and the orbital period is 3 hours.

Given,

Semi major axis length = 6 x 10 6 Orbital period = 3 hours

Solution:

Substitute the given values in the formula to find orbital speed, = 2 x ∏ x a / T = 2 x 3.14 x 6 x 10 6 / 3 x 60 x60 = 37.68 x 10 6 / 3 x 3600 = 3488.889 m / s
