Pipe Diameter Calculator

Pipes are made from materials such as galvanized steel, black steel, cast iron. It is also prepared from various plastics like ABS, PVC, CPVC, polyethylene and so on. In plumbing, pipe size is also termed as Nominal Pipe Size (NPS). Pipes are identified by trade names which are related to dimensions. Given here is an online pipe diameter calculator that can be used for calculating the diameter of the pipes for the given values of volumetric flow rate and velocity.

Formula:

Pipe Diameter(in) = √ ((0.408 x q) / v) Where, q = Volume Flow Rate(gpm) v = Velocity(ft/s)

Example:

Calculate the diameter of the pipe for volumetric flow rate as 12 m3/s and steam velocity as 15 m/s.

Solution:

Pipe Diameter = √ ((0.408 x 12) / 15)
= 1.0086 m
