Shear Modulus Calculator

Here is the Shear Modulus Calculator to calculate the Shear modulus or modulus of rigidity. It is the ratio of shear stress to shear strain, where shear strain is defined as displacement per unit sample length. It is expressed in Pascals (Pa), gigapascals (GPa) or KSI. Modulus of Rigidity calculation is made simple here. Shear Modulus (G) expresses the tendency of an object to deform along an axis when opposing forces are applied along that axis.

Formula:

S = (F x D0) / (A x ΔD) Where, S = Shear Modulus (Pa) F = Tangential Force Acting (N) D0 = Distance between Surfaces (m) ΔD = Distance Sheared (m) A = Area of Surface being Sheared (m2)

Example:

Calculate the shear modulus for Tangential Force acting at 5 N, Distance between Surfaces and sheared with 7 mm and 8 mm and Area of Surface being Sheared is about 6 mm2.

Solution:

S = (F x D0) / (A x ΔD)
= (5 x 7) / (6 x 8)
= 729166.6667 Pa
