Learn How to do Sobel Test - Definition

Definition:

Sobel test is a technique of analysing the implication of a mediation effect.

Formula :

Sobel Equation = A * B / √ ( B2 * Sa2 + A 2 * Sb2 ) Aroian Equation = A * B /√ ( B2 * Sa2 + A 2 * Sb2 + Sa2 * Sb2 )
Where,

A = Association between IV & mediator Coefficient. B = Association between mediator & DV Sa = Standard error of A. Sb = Standard error of B. IV = Independent Variable. DV = Dependent Variable.

Example:

Calculate sobel test, if path 'A' was equal to 2, and path 'B' was equal to 3, with standard errors of 0.3 ( Sa ) and 0.4 ( Sb ) respectively.

Given,

Coefficient for Association between IV & mediator = 2 Coefficient for Association between mediator & DV = 3 Standard error of A = 0.3 Standard error of B = 0.4

To Find,

Sobel test statistic value

Solution:

Substitute the given values in the formula to find the Sobel test statistic value, = A * B /√  B2 * Sa2 + A 2 * Sb2  = 2 x 3/ √  3 x 3 x 0.3 x 0.3 + 2 x 2 x 0.4 x0.4 Sobel Test statistic value = 4.983
