Formula:

Qs/Qt(Fraction) = ( C - A ) / ( C - V ) Qs/Qt(%)= (( C - A ) / ( C - V )) × 100 Where, P = Pulmonary shunt ratio C = Oxygen content in pulmonary end capillary A = Oxygen content in arterial V = Oxygen content in mixed venous blood

Example:

Calculate the pulmonary shunt ratio with the oxygen content in pulmonary end capillarys of 20 ml/L, the oxygen content in arterial of 35 ml/L and oxygen content in the mixed venous blood of 60 ml/L.

Solution:

Qs/Qt ratio = ( ( 20 - 35 ) / ( 20 - 60 ) ) × 100
= ( -15 ) / (-40 ) x 100
=0.375 x 100
= 37.5 %
