Formula:

Number of Cells = Total Cells Counted / ( Squares Counted x 0.1 )

The CSF Cell count is calculated by taking the samples of the fluid from the lumbar puncture (spinal tap). The normal white blood cell count is between 0 and 5. The normal red blood cell count is 0. The Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF) calculation helps in detecting any Meningitis and infection of the brain or spinal cord, Tumor, abscess, or area of tissue death (infarct), any Inflammation or Bleeding into the spinal fluid.

Example

The total number of cells counted is 100 and the squares counted is 70 μl. What is the csf cell count?
               = 100 / (70 x 0.1)
               = 100 / 7
               =14.29 μl.
