What is prandtl number - Definition and Meaning

Prandtl Number :

Prandtl number Pr, is the ratio of momentum diffusivity ( kinematic viscosity ) to thermal diffusivity. It is a dimensionless number (i.e) a quantity without any dimension. The unit of kinematic viscosity is m2 / s.

Formula :

Pr = v / α where, Pr = Prandtl Number v = Kinematic Viscosity α = Thermal Diffusivity

Example :

Calculate Prandtl number of Mercury at 0oC which has kinematic viscosity (v) 1.526 m2/s and thermal diffusivity (α) 13.534 m2/s. Solution: Pr = 1.526 / 13.534     = 0.112.
