The concept of zero as a number was practically used in India in 9^{th} century AD. Indian scholar **Pingala** was the first person to use zero. He and his other contemporary writers referred it as 'Sunya' which means empty or void.

In English language, different names for the number 0 include zero, nought, naught, nil, zilch and zip. Zero (0) is the only number which can not be represented by Roman numerals.

Zero is either positive nor negative. 0 (zero) is both a number and the numerical digit used to represent that number in numerals. It plays a central role in mathematics as the additive identity of the integers, real numbers, and many other algebraic structures.

The word 'zero' was derived via French zero from Venetian zero, which came via Italian from Arabic safira which means 'empty'.
