The birth of sine is credited to the great **Indian mathematician** - astronomer **Aryabhata**. He made a great influence in the birth of trigonometry by defining sine, cosine, and inverse sine back. He called sine in his work as ardha-jya which means half-chord. People simply called it as **jya**.

Arabic mathematicians referred his work and translated it into arabic language and called it as **jiba**. These was later translated into latin as sinus means cove or bay, which was then translated into English as Sine.

Aryabhata was the first mathematician to detail both sine and versine (1 - cos x) tables, in 3.75° intervals from 0° to 90°, to 4 decimal places. Alphabetic code has been used by him to define a set of increments. Value of Sin30 was proved to be correct while using Aryabhata's table.

Aryabhata's **astronomical calculations** was influenced by Arabians and they used his **trigonometric tables** to compute many astronomical tables.
