Auguste Comte (19 January 1798 - 5 September 1857) defines Mathematics as "The science of indirect measurement."

Darwin (12 February 1809 - 19 April 1882) humorously quoted Math as "A mathematician is a blind man in a dark room looking for a black cat which isn't there."
