Carl Friedrich Gauss

Carl Friedrich Gauss is a German Mathematician born on April 30, 1777. He was praised as 'Prince of Mathematicians'. He contributions are immense to the field of number theory, geometry, probability theory, geodesy , planetary astronomy, theories of function and potential theory.

He was a Prodigious child, because at the age of three he found an arithmetical error in the complicated payroll problem. He also found the correct answer and stated to his father. At the age of 7, he surprised his teachers by summing the integers from 1 to 100 and there and then told the answer is 5050.

Gauss proved the fundamental theory of algebra, stating that any polynomial has a root of the form a+bi. At the age of 24, he gave a brilliant contribution to the mathematics, called as Disquisitiones Arithmeticae. This work detailed the study of of number theory and properties of integers. He proved that every number is the sum of at most three triangular numbers and developed the algebra of Congruences.

He worked as professor of mathematics in Gottingen observatory in 1807. In collaboration with Wilhelm weber, he was one of the key founder for making a primitive telegraph device, that sent messages for the distance of 1500 meters.

To recognize his achievement in the field of electromagnetism, the international unit of magnetic induction is called as Gauss.
