Refractive Index Formula

Refractive index is defined as the ratio of the velocity of light in a vacuum to its velocity in a specified medium. It can also be termed as index of refraction. It is a dimensionless number that describes how light propagates through that medium. Below refractive index formula can be used to find the ratio and depends on the velocity of light in vacuum and a medium.

Formula

n = c / ν

Where,

n = Index of refraction
c =Velocity of light in vacuum
ν = Velocity of light in the medium
