This online calculator displays how to calculate leap year. It is a special year in the sense that it has one day more than the other years. That is a leap year has 366 days instead of 365 days. We have a set of rules to determine if the year is a leap year or a non leap year. Simply saying, a year which is divisible by 4, 100 and 400 without having any reminder is a leap year. Enter the year and click on calculate button and check is it a leap year.
2000 - Is it a leap year?
Divide 2000 by 4.
2000 / 4 is 500 and hence it is divisble by 4. So, divide it by 100.
2000 / 100 is 20 and hence it is divisible by 100. Now, divide 2000 by 400. 2000/400 gives 50 and so 2000 is divisible by 400.
All the three rules are satisfied and hence, it is a leap year.
The reason behind the leap year is that the actual time taken for the earth to revolve around the Sun is 365 days and 6 hours, which is 365 days and a quarter day. For our ease and convenience the gregorian calendar is planned to accumulate the last quarter day every year and to show as one whole day in the 4th year. Hence, once every 4 years the year contains 366 days and such years are called the leap years and this extra day is included as 29th day of February. Otherwise February would have only 28 days.
