Hydroxide Ion (HO-) is a diatomic anion. It is negatively charged chemical compound made up of oxygen and hydrogen held together by a Covalent bond. It is widely used in many biological and non biological processes. HO- acts as a base catalyst which abstracts protons from weak acid to react with other reagents. Sodium hydroxide commonly known as caustic soda is used in the manufacturing of pulp and paper, textiles, drinking water, soaps and detergents, and as a drain cleaner.
