Definition:

The x-intercept is the x-coordinate of a point, where the line crosses the x-axis of the system of coordinate and the the y-intercept is the y-coordinate of a point, where the line crosses the y-axis of the system of coordinate.

Formula:
X = (C - BY) / A Y = (C - AX) / B Where A,B,C - coefficients, X,Y - Points
Example:

Calculate the x and y intercept for the equation 4x + 5y = 2

Given:

A = 4 B = 5 C = 2

Solution:
Step 1:

Calculation of x intercept value: X = (C - BY) / A X = (2 - 5Y) / 4 ----------(1) Substitute y = 0 in equation 1 X = 2 / 4 = 0.5 X = 0.5 (0.5,0)

Step 2:

Calculation of y intercept value: Y = (C - AX) / B Y = (2 - 4X) / 5 ----------(2) Substitute y = 0 in equation 2 Y = 2 / 5 = 0.4 Y = 0.4 (0,0.4)
